Medical Scrubs & Uniforms
The history of the scrubs uniform in the medical profession makes fascinating reading. Healers of past ages wore everyday dress. Then medical professionals started to wear coats or butcher’s aprons to protect their street clothes. In the 20th century, medical practitioners started to wear regulation uniforms. At first these medical scrubs and laboratory coats were white to reflect cleanliness. It was soon found, however, that the glare of white uniforms and white sheets and white operating rooms caused eyestrain and fatigue in many health care workers, moreover the sight of bloodstains on white uniforms was very noticeable and unpleasant. So the traditional white was replaced with varying shades of green that provided a restful contrast to the white, and softened the look of a red blood stain.
However the idea that fashion should be incorporated into medical apparel was long overlooked. Every component of the medical scrub uniform was designed for functionality and to be easy to launder and cheap to replace.
The addition of colors other than green, including some more feminine colors and printed fabrics, introduced a new look to medical scrubs, and fashion was introduced as an important element in the design of scrubs. Nowadays fashion has become a major factor in medical dress, and medical scrubs are still functional but now also very stylish. Popular television dramas such as Grey’s Anatomy found doctors and nurses dressed more stylishly, and viewers working in the health care field wanted the same look. Now there is a line of Grey’s Anatomy Scrubs available. As well, Landau scrubs in fashionable styles and colors of Plum, Sage, Salsa make for hot styles and a truly fashionable look.
To complete the scrubs outfit, there are fashionable scrub pants and nurses shoes that are also available in colors to complement the different colors of scrubs clothing now available.
